Sometimes the moment that shatters you is the moment God plants the seed that will grow your roots deeper in Him.

I have a story just like you. We all do. We wouldn’t be here, living and breathing on this earth if we didn’t. Like I mentioned on the Home Page, I’m one who will connect with you on a deeper level. Ask me a question, I will give you the real, un-sugarcoated answer! For more than 30 years, I lived on the surface. It didn’t serve me well. I felt isolated, alone, and hidden—like a turtle in its shell, afraid to peek its head out. My mind constantly spiraled with questions:

What if someone saw the real me?
What would they think?
Would they accept my mistakes?
Who could love someone that feels so broken?

It wasn’t until I removed myself from the comforts of home, into unknown territory, where the Lord broke me wide open!

He began digging up the roots that felt like they were suffocating every breath I took. The roots of lies, abuse, manipulation, betrayal, trauma, and the long list of labels the world, and other people, put on me, not to mention the ones I proudly stuck on myself!

You might be asking, “How did you do it? How did you dig these painful roots up knowing it would bring up times you didn’t want to recall or relive…memories you just wanted to forget?”

Spoiler Alert: It wasn’t easy! It hurt and if I’m being honest, it still does! There are still seasons when God reveals deep roots that need to be pulled up, sometimes yanked up at a mighty force with some extra help from friends, my counselor, and most importantly Jesus!

What I discovered as I’ve been on this long journey with Jesus is, it’s not about how I did it or what I did in the moments, but instead Who I invited into the space with me to sit alongside me.

In a world that is full of noise, what God was leading me to was stillness with Him.

To embrace the pause, take a breath, praise, pray, reflect, and listen to what He has to say to me and who He says I am!

In the Bible, this is known as Selah

pronounced /say-lah/

Selah is oftentimes found in between stanzas in the Book of Psalms signifying a time to pause, praise, and reflect. Throughout the years, Selah has taken root in my life in a mighty way. It looks like:

  • Sitting at my kitchen table during my quiet time reflecting on Scripture or journaling gratitude, prayers, and thoughts.
  • Driving in my car as a commercial comes on as I mute the radio to just sit with the Lord in quietness for a minute.
  • Getting ready every morning for school listening to the Bible App or Lectio 365.
  • Winding down, like a tight spring ready to be released from a long overstimulating day as I pause, breathe, and reflect on some joy-filled moments the day brought.

Friend, no matter where you are in the unfolding story God has written for you (Psalm 139:16) know that you are not alone. The Lord is with you as He pulls up unwanted roots, plants new seeds, waters and nourishes them in order for you to remain rooted in Him to continue to grow, bloom, and be His light in a world that needs Him more than ever right now!

Always remember, you are so loved and never alone!
Looking forward to growing our roots together!
